The clove tree, which belongs to the Myrtaceae family, is native to Indonesia. It grows to a height of 10 to 20 meters. It has lanceolate leaves and racemose inflorescences. The flower buds are initially pale in color which gradually changes to green, after which they begin to take on a bright reddish color indicating that they are ready to be picked before opening. Clove is classically used as a spice and as an anesthetic treatment for dental pain. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of flower buds.
