It is a shrub of the Ericaceae family, native to Mexico and the northern United States. It is a plant with a horizontal rhizomatous root and oval or lanceolate green leaves. It has few flowers, hanging and white. The fruit is a red capsule with numerous seeds inside. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves.
